NAME KIMURA, Shuhei
TITLE Computer-Integrated Language Learning - A New Horizon of College English Education -
ABSTRACT

The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a new model of project-based college English education in Japan where class activities are inextricably connected with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and to generalize the conditions to realize it.

The primary significance of this research lies in defining such practice as Computer-Integrated Language Learning (CILL) by distinguishing it from the conventional concept of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in terms of how ICT functions. In CILL, ICT is integrated with class tasks so deeply that it is no longer regarded as special tools for both learners and teachers whereas in CALL ICT remains assistive.

Based on the practice of the Project-based English Program (PEP) at Ritsumeikan University, this research attempts to categorize the tasks into four activities, Research, Authoring, Collaboration and Output, and to analyze the relevant usage of ICT integrated with them.

This paper consists of six chapters.
Chapter 1 outlines the changing global paradigm of education and clarifies the issues to be addressed in this research. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the history of CALL based on literature study, focusing on the concept of normalisation from Bax's criticism of Warschauer's classification of CALL. It leads to the proposal and definition of CILL. In Chapter 3, this study finds the early form of CILL in the practice of English education carried out at Keio University SFC. Chapter 4 examines the PEP at Ritsumeikan University to clarify the ICT activities linked to four types of class tasks: Research, Authoring, Collaboration and Output. In addition, the effectiveness of PEP was confirmed from three indicators. In Chapter 5, the requirements for CILL are organized and generalized into three elements in terms of ICT resources: Ubiquity, Reasonability and Transformability. Chapter 6 summarizes the discussions of this paper and shows the future possibilities and tasks of CILL.
